Ulnar Tunnel Syndrome: Effective Ice Application for Pain Relief

Question
Hi, thanks for volunteering! I know this may not be your specialty, but it seemed you would know the answer. I'm dealing Ulnar Tunnel, which is just like Carpal Tunnel except it's in a differnt area. My doctor is teating me with anti-inflammatories, excersises and ice for now. She is hard to get a question to and I just have a quick one. Can you please tell me where to put the ice? My hands and forarms bother me.
Thanks,
Lisa

Answer
Hi, Lisa.

First, I would think that you need to talk to your doctor. I realize that you said she is difficult to question-not sure if you mean it's difficult to get ahold of her, or that she doesn't answer your questions-either way, your doc should be the one to tell you, since she's dealing with it. I can give you an opinion-your ulnar nerve radiates down from your elbow area, on the pinky finger side. If you trace up your arm on that side, using the arm bone (ulnar bone) as a reference, it will take you to the elbow, on the area where the ulnar nerve comes out. I believe that what you're referring to as ulnar tunnel is Cubital tunnel syndrome  (elbow).  I'm not sure what kind of pain you're having, but if it's burning and radiating down towards your hand, the above area would be my guess as far as where you're supposed to ice. At any rate, you can ice your forearm, wrist/hand/elbow, in general, without any problems (as far as I know).  Sorry this is so long! Anyway, contact your doc as soon as you can, to clarify her instructions. Don't let them put you off-you have a valid question.  Good luck!
