Neck and Shoulder Tension: Treatments and Exercises

I am curious as to what type of treatments and/or exercises you might do in this situation: A middle-aged man spends many hours at his computer and is complaining of tension in his neck and shoulders.

Thank you for your question, Angie.

I recommend that he do two things:  First apply ice compresses to his neck and shoulders for 5-10 minute intervals alternating with warm-hot compresses for 5-10 minutes intermittently. Second, do range-of-motion stretching exercises every hour when sitting at the computer with a "post-it" note attached to his computer monitor to remind him to do it.  Then use www.Google.com/Advanced Search to find "Neck and shoulder stretches" to locate websites that offer such stretches and he pick from them which work best for his areas of concern.
