QuestionHi there,
I really hope that you can help me as I am literally tearing my hair out with this one and have gotten a bit lost.
I am currently doing a Sports Therapy course and I have an assignment to do on Contraindications and actions. For all the types of contraindications we have been given we have to comment on what they are etc however we also have to comment for each on electrical treatments.
My question is - Please can you help me by giving me some idea on what electrical treatments there are avaialable and used within Sports Massage, just so that I can then research them for my assignment for myself and find out what the contraindications etc are on my own.
The course tutor gave us an idea of what is used but I am having great difficulty in finding any information - so am guessing that I have been looking in the wrong area and searching for the wrong things. The only one I have found so far has been infra-red.
Your help with this will be highly appreciated.
Thank you
Kat
AnswerGood morning Kat. Thank you for your question. I have been thinking about this topic for a few hours now and I am afraid that I have not thought up too much which can help you.
Electricity and massage to my mind do not blend. Ultra-sound is the other type of electrical work which can be done on the body. But, I must add that ultrasound and infra-red is not massage.
In my opinion-no massage practitioner should be using infra-red or ultra-sound machinery for injury. I don't care if the injury is acute or chronic-massage treatment cannot be done with machinery.
I realise that this is biase on my part-but injured clients should not be seen by massage practitioners. The only exception I would support-is the recommendation of the massage practitioner by the doctor or physiotherapist.
The trap with injuries: From Justin Howse, orthopaedic surgeon and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons-"treatment itself does not heal injury".
Only the body's internal mechanisms can repair traumatised tissue. All the treatment does is create an environment where the body repairs itself.
I doubt that I have answered your question Kat. Unfortunately, I might be the wrong person to ask. I would like to be able to offer you more help-but it is simply beyond me.
If you would like to contact me again-you are most welcome to do so. Good luck with your assignment.
Cheers from New Zealand.
