Hot Oil Massage Safety & Hygiene: What You Need to Know
QuestionHi Zira,
I recently had my first hot oil massage.
I enjoyed it but I have a question.
How sanitary is this?
The RMT had heated the oil in what looked like an over sized highball glass. It had about a lire of clear organic odorless coconut oil in it. This was far more oil than what was used during my massage. She used her four fingers repeatedly
dipped in the glass to get the oil out and onto me.
Is this the normal way to do this? I am sure she uses rest of the oil for other clients. (She told me she keeps the oil in the fridge when not using it so it won't go bad). One thing she said when she first started was the oil was so hot it almost burnt her hands. So the oil was well heated. What do you think? Is the sanitary?
AnswerTo me that doesn't sound sanitary at all. I know the oil is hot & heat usually burns off germs & bacteria, but it can only do so much. I mean peoples skim comes off in the therapists hands sometimes & that would be going into thehot oil pot. The whole refridgerator thing isn't a big deal, but the rest of it sounds sketchy to me. When I heat oil up I leave it in the bottle I have & just throw the bottle in hot water or the microwave. It stays heated & there is no risk of contamination. After the treatment I dump the hot water & wash the bottle. Sorry for the late reply. Hope this helps. :)
