Post-Surgical Therapy for Adults: Rebuilding Mobility & Strength

QUESTION: Hi,

What kinds of therapy would occur for an adult in their 20s to 30s who recently had several surgeries throughout their body, their body was extremely underdeveloped, and they had to essentially learn how to start all movement and mobility from the beginning similar to a newborn baby?

I'm gonna say start out with a lighter relaxation form of massage & then slowly incorperate deeper work & stretching into the mix.

QUESTION: Thank you for your reply. After massage and stretching, what kind of exercises or exercise equipment might be used to essentially learn movement & mobility? Or to help with endurance, strength, or coordination? General everyday mobility is the primary objective.

ANSWER: Start with therabands & then slowly work into lights weights. A physio @ the hospital should be able to show you everything properly & in person.

Considering the situation, what other things are common for the physio @ the hospital to do?

More than likely the hospital will just start with the basics to get the mobility going again & then from there a referral to a physio clinic where the rehab may be continued will be what the rehab protocol will follow. Every is dependant on the physio & the progress of the individual. Its hard to say how long the rehab will take & the style of the physio applying the rehab.
