Gel Nail Discoloration: Troubleshooting & Solutions for Nail Technicians

Question
QUESTION: I have been doing nails only three months.  My client has been having a non soak of gel placed over her tip.  However the gel has cracked the odd time and has no flexibility.  On the nails my client has bang and broke, i had to gently file the whole nail off in order to reapply a new extension.  However today my client said there is some discoloration on 2 nails. I had a look and it look pale. I am now going to have to file off these nails and put new on.  I said to the client maybe she should have a break from extensions. But she works in fashion and design and says she can not be without them.  I am the only person who has been doing her nails. Is it ok to put new extensions on these two nails, and can a fungal infection be treated under a gel nail.  I am worrying and i do not want to worry my client.

Can you be sued for a client getting a fungal infection also.  There is no green on the nail yet, a slight pale yellow maybe developing.

ANSWER: Tina,
No you cannot be sued so try not to stress out. The only time a fungus will develope is if it has a place to grow. Fungus grows in dark moist places. So it makes sense that if a nail lifts or cracks it can get a fungus! All you need to do is remove the nail, file it down, remove any moisture and or discoloration with your buffer. Then you can apply a new nail and it will be fine!

Assure your client its no big deal and if she ever breaks a nail in the future to please come get it fixed as soon as possible that way you can take care of the problem before it even starts.

For her next fill, you can use acrylic nippers to remove any old gel that you dont like and you can ALSO file it down. Put fresh gel on her nail and you are good to go!

QUESTION: luckily there was no fungus. However my concern is, if a client ever got a fungal infection through her gel nail, and i removed the old nail and replaced a new nail, as well as sanitizing the nail properly and gently buffing the nail.  How would the fungus disappear with the new nail on?  Would it grow out? And also how would you be able to treat it under an enhancement. I would love to know this for future reference. As I would not be able to apply anti fungal dropper underneath an extension.

Answer
Ok If there is a fungus, you would NEver put a enhancement on. You would do all other 9 nails and let it get treated on its own. The chances of that happening are slim if you take good care of the nails and fix any problems from the begging before that even happens.

You also need to google or read in your text book, the difference between a fungus, a mold, a bacteria, and so forth. Just because you see slight dis-coloration does not mean its a fungus. If its just a water spot from lifting you can like I said put a new gel on and it will grow out.

However that being said NO you do not work on a fungus nail ever. Even for pedicures, if somebody had a fungus you would not work on that toenail. Same goes for the hands.
