Is there any difference between black anf green olive fruit?

Black and green olives come from the same tree.  The difference in the color is due to the ripeness of the two.  Unripe olives are green, and fully ripened olives are black.  

The taste difference comes from how long each olive is allowed to ferment in its own brine.  Green olives usually have the pit removed, but black olives may still have the pit intact.

One other difference is that black olives typically come in cans, and green olives typically come in jars.
