QuestionDo diamond earrings have to be certified diamonds, if it is only 1 carat. And if they aren't is it worth it to get them certified. Most of all what does it mean for diamonds to be certified.

My apologies for my slow response as I have been at an all consuming Jewellery Confernece since last week....
The simple answer is that any diamond could be certified, but no diamond needs to be certified.
Certification is done by a recognised gem lab, and thus papers are issued to go along with the stone -0 like a blood test. This does raise the cost of the stone, but also allows the consumer to be more relaxed in their purchase. When they are certified they are graded by colour - increments away from pure white which is denoted by the first letters along with clarity, which refers to the amount of inclusions in the stone, and their size whetehr you can see then with 10X loupe or the naked eye etc....
However, the diamonds that I uise are rarely certified, as I know an amazing diamond dealer and have been looking at rocks for 20+ years.
One point I might add is that just because a diamond is graded at one level, it doesnt mean that it's a livelier rock than one of a lower level........the grading is quite sterile and scientific, not allowing for the touchy feely end of how a stone reacts in light.
