QuestionHello,
I have read all of your previous answers regarding silver and have a bit of a different one for you.
Is it possible to 'burn' or overheat silver?
I have a bunch of button sized bits of silver that have been melted and refined from scrap. Was trying to melt two larger bits together but they simply would not cooperate.
They would melt ok, but then quickly unmelt despite there being no change in the heat levels. After that they would not even consider melting or balling up together.
I read one very brief very vague mention of burning silver but no other sources have a mention of this.
Until now, all has been going well. Please help!
AnswerGREETINGS,
It sounds as if you may have a lack of heat as well as oxidation.
It is possible to boil or burn the melt, but you would know about it by the vapour or steam coming from the molten mass.
However what you describe sounds as if you have oxidised the surface which is a bit like a coating...and I think you need more heat along with borax as a flux to melt your buttons.
Hope this helps, P
