Oxidizing Silver Without Affecting Gold: Expert Advice

Question
Hi Chris,

I have a piece of gold and silver jewelry.  I'd like to oxidize the silver part and have the gold remain natural.  Will liver of sulfur or muriatic acid or household bleach - all substances I understand will blacken silver - have any affect on gold?  I assume no, but I need expert advice.  Thanks.

John

Answer
John,
They all do oxidize however as with anything the one that smells the worst is usually the best...or at least it was the one that I preferred to use It seemed to work with a more richer darkness. the bleach seemed to have a green tint as did the muriatic acid. however I  have used wax to mask areas that I wished to remain untarnished and then removed it with warm water. but a precise painting of the needed areas and then a slight polish to define the edges will also do the trick.  It does however darken with heat so that the tone can be enhanced as desired and varied with a slight use of the torch in appropriately treated areas, however I do suggest a practice piece to refine your skills It always makes for a much more professional look when you hone your method and decide upon your final path to patina. I hope this gives you some options and helps you choose your favorite shade and method.
