QuestionHello! I inherited a diamond anniversary band from my grandmother. We haven't had it appraised yet but it looks like five diamonds, perhaps over one carat total weight. It's set in white gold I believe. My question is this: underneath the center stone is an arrow and a small piece of the setting can be pushed in the direction of the arrow. Why is this and what is it? Any info is appreciated. Thank you!

Firstly; I hope you really treasure this ring, as good quality items from before World War Two (especially in white gold) have become very collectible, PLUS it belonged to your Grandmother. You lucky duck :-)
As you appreciate I can't see the item, but I talked to a colleague of mine who is a Manufacturing Jewelry and he suggested (remember we can't see it) that it locks in the diamonds from behind the setting.
Have you tried sliding it over?
Can the diamonds be removed if you do?
BE VERY CAREFUL TRYING THIS AT HOME! as diamonds have a nasty habit of 'popping off' and getting lost in the carpet!
