Ring Resizing Issues: Understanding Why Your Ring Might Not Be Resizable
QuestionFirst I will explain the ring. A white gold band, 1.7 carat diamond, two baguettes on each side and then a chanel of four tiny diamonds on each side going about half way down the band.
I got my engagement ring in April 07 and it is now March of 08. I noticed in December that one of the side chanels looks almost chipped. I finally took it in to get it re-sized. I went to 2 places and both of them turned me away because of this little chip. The salesman tried to explain that I need an entirely new mount for the ring and said that it shouldn't have chipped with normal wear and tear and it must be the way they formed the ring and how they compressed the air out of the ring. They said it is now a weak spot. First of all, does this sound reasonable? Secondly, should we take it back to the same jeweler if they formed it badly and make them re-do it?

Dont panic! salesmen hype is always an issue in this very competitive business. The diamond could have chipped or broken in the setting when it was set or as you were wearing it. If you can send me a close up picture of the ring I could comment further, take it back to where you purchased the ring, explain to them what had happened and Im sure they will accommodate you. If not, get a third opinion from a graduate gemologist, reputable jewelry store who has been in business for over 10 years preferably with a shop on premise.
