Gemstone Sales & ID Requirements in Diamond Districts

Question
Hi-- I am a writer (in California) doing research. If someone walked into a broker's shop (in the Manhattan Diamond District, for example) and offered gemstones for sale, would the seller be required to present a ID for his or her self, and would provenance of the stone be asked for? This would be a big help. Thanks.

Answer
HI WILL,

I WOULD SAY THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME THE SELLER WOULD BE REQUIRED TO HAVE I.D. AND THE PROVENANCE OF THE SONES WOULD BE ASKED FOR. NOW THAT BEING SAID OF COURSE THERE ARE SOME BROKERS THAT WOULD NOT CARE, IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT. THERE ARE GOOD AND BAD PEOPLE IN ALL WALKS OF LIFE. SO IT DEPENDS ON WHICH KIND YOUR LOOKING FOR. GOOD LUCK
