Identifying Real Gold: Understanding Pendant Markings (14K)

Question
A few years ago my mother-inlaw gave me a gold saint medal. After wearing it for years the top part of the pendent is starting to were out . My friend told me that if its real gold it shouldn't be a problem to have it fixed. On the back of the pendent are the markings 08 or 0B then 14k. (The marking are very small) Would the markings 08 (or 0B) have any thing to do with the quality of the metal. Thank for your time.

Answer
Dina, I believe the pendant is gold. The only way to know for certain is to have the metal tested by a jeweler. However, the marking is for 14k and should be accurate. The other numerals or letters do not have anything to do with the quality of the metal and may be the maker mark.

I have repaired many pendants with wear at the top, generally on the bail. The bail is the part the neck chain goes through. If the bail is attached with small loop to the pendant, that may be the place of wear. Either way, the repair should be something a competent jeweler can do rather easily.

I hope this answer helps you. Thanks again, Dina.
