Diamond Bezel Discoloration: Troubleshooting & Repair
QuestionI had 40+ diamonds set on my watch bezel, Three of the stone in differnt spots are turning a rust yellow, I have sent it back to the place two times for the same spots/stones they said they replaced the stones but the same thing is happing. They are also saying it's not in the setting it's the diamond or something like that. now refuse to fix them with out a charge, I have had many nice watches and this is the only time I have had a problem like this, Have you heard of anything like this or have any suggestions.
Thank you for your time, Tony
AnswerTony,
I have not ever heard of diamonds changing colors. As you know they are one of the most durable stones on earth. It is possible to burn them with a torch they are carbon after all. You can also break them because of the cleveage but only if you hit them it the right place with force.
If they did turn rust it would be what is around them is iron which could possibly stain the surface which could be removed with anything that eats rust or iron oxide. Sodium bisulfate in water may work for example. Hydrochloric acid should remove it as well. These things would not be kind to your watch however the stones would have to be taken out to clean them. Is is possible
your watch is a base metal instead of gold? That is what I would have to suspect.
Hope this helps you.
