Question
IMG_0855 Amethyst brok
The string used on my 20-30 yr. old amethyst necklace broke, and when I tried to take it all apart for restringing, couldn't get the beads of the string as they seemed to be glued on some way. I have tried hot water, and various household solvents, but cannot dissolve whatever was used so I can remove the beads for restringing. Any suggestions? Attached is a photo. Thank you.
AnswerJoan, likely the best solvent to try is acetone. Older fingernail polish remover contained acetone. Check the label to see on a new bottle of the stuff. You can also purchase a small container of acetone at home supply stores. Some sell only gallons but you need just enough to immerse the necklace. A paint store may also have acetone.
Put the necklace in a glass container with a secure lid (like a jar), cover with acetone and let it soak overnight. The next morning you can rinse it well and you will know right away if the acetone has worked (or is working) on the glue. You do not want to breath the fumes. Also, acetone is quite flammable so keep liquid and fumes away from flames or sparks. Outside is a good idea if you do not have another place to put the jar.
I suggested a glass jar because many plastics are affected by acetone. Most "zip lock" baggies are ok with it and you might try that being certain the top is sealed well.
I really doubt the cement is shellac but alcohol works with that old one. Acetone works with epoxy, super glue and some others.
Joan, best wishes in getting the lovely beads on new string. : )
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
