Identifying Beryl: Refractive Index, Specific Gravity & Dichroism
QuestionWhat tests can you preform to find out if a specific rock is beryl?
AnswerHi Ryan,
The two basic tests ar the refractive index and the specific gravity that pretty much will identify beryl. The refractive index is approximately 1.56 - 1.59 with a specific gravity of 2.76. There are many more tests that can be done but these two will tell the tale. And since beryl is a double refractive crystal a dichroscope will work to tell if the stone is DR. You must know how to use these instruments for them to be effective.
