Securing Wedding and Engagement Rings: Alternatives to Soldering

Question
My engagement and wedding rings are a set, but both bands are flat so they just sit against each other.  Is there a way to fasten them together other than soldering them?  I did that on another set and was not happy with the way it looked.  I thought about trying a metal adhesive, but am not sure if that is a good idea.  Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Answer
Hi, Jan.

Adhesives might hold for a while but likely not for long. I have used most sorts of cements used for metals in jewelry uses and cannot recommend any of them for this purpose. The cement would have to be quite thin and water clear so it would not show. Only an epoxy such as Hughes 330 fits that standard. By all means, do not even think super glue for this job. Still...

Still, the best approach is to solder the bands together.  Done properly, the bands are placed one on the other, lined up well along the meeting edges and then a tiny piece of solder is flowed on one small area. I would then do the same on the opposite side.  There will be only two small places where the rings are soldered.

A good jeweler will take a fine wheel or other tool and gently run it along the solder areas on the outside. This is to match the same look as where the bands touch on the rest of the ting.  When polished, you can look closely and see where the join is but believe me it will not show to other folks when properly finished.

I have to tell it like it is to me and from my experience. Fair enough?

God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
