Understanding Fertility & Conception After a First Child

Question
Hi, I am 32 years old and have a 4 1/2 yr old son. I dont have an ob/gyn right now so figured I could run a couple of things past you. My son is from my ex husband and I have been trying to conceive with my new husband for four months now. (he is 35 years old)It has only been 4 months but being I conceived my 1st child by the first time I had intercourse with my exhusband I am of course thinking there is now something wrong with me or my present husband. I have a 28 day cycle and we try on days 10 thru 14 or 15. I get quite dry by day 3 of intercourse so I dont know if that could be an issue. I recently purchased a lubricant called Pre-seed as they said it doesnt harm the sperm. Am I maybe missing the day? What are the odds its him? We wont have any insurance for 6 months until his union benefits kick in so we cant even get any testing done! Any tips at all would be great. My second issue is that before trying to conceive I used to just wake up on the 28th day with my period, thats it no warning. Now it seems since I have started trying I spot brown for 3-5 days before my period. What is that? Sorry for the super long note but this has literally been the LONGEST 4 months of my life. Thank you in advance, Lisa

Answer
If you have been trying to conceive for four months, that is really only four days of ovulation. So be patient. If you have a normal 28 day cycle (from the first day of your period until the first day of your next period) ovulation occurs on cycle day #14. You can only become pregnant if you have sex on cycle day #13, 14, 15, or 16. You cannot become pregnant on any other day of the month. If you start too soon, you may deplete the sperm stores. Try waiting until cycle day #13 to start having intercourse and then cntinue until cycle day #16, each month. YOu can purchase an ovulation predictor kit from the pharmacy to further pinpoint the exact day of ovulation and concentrate on having intercourse then (braketing the day of intercourse). If, after 12 months of trying (that is only 12 days of ovulation) you have not conceived, then you should see an gynecologist and start a work up to check for ovulation, semenanalysis, tubal patency, chlamydia, hostile cervical mucus, endometrial adequacy, etc, Good Luck to you. Do not lose hope and don't let it get tedious. Continue to enjoy the process.
