Postpartum Incontinence & Fertility: Causes, Treatments & Outlook

Question
I gave birth to my first child in 1999.  I have had some incontinence problems.  Would this affect my conceiving another time?  How to treat?
Thank you for quick reply.

Answer
Sincere apologies for the delay in response; have had a very busy past few days.

NO, incontinence will have no affect on your fertility.

As for treatment, there are several different options depending on which type incontinence you're experiencing (eg, stress, urge, etc.).  Examples might include physical therapy, medication, or surgery; again, depending on your individual problem.  Your best bet would be to see a urogynecologist, a specialist in treatment women with incontinence and/or pelvic floor dysfunction.  There are specific, sophisticated, diagnostic procedures to help identify the cause of your incontinence and what would be the best method of treatment.

Not sure where you're located, but here are a couple of good sources to help you find a urogynecologist should you choose to pursue treatment:

American Urogynecological Society:  www.augs.org
International Urogynecological Association:  www.iuga.org
