Understanding Oblong Sacs in Early Pregnancy: What You Need to Know
QuestionHello, I am 11 weeks pregnant and have had 3 ultrasounds. The first two went great the baby had a strong hearbeat and it was active. The third one however was in the hospital after having the flu pretty bad a couple days ago. I was told that the baby was in an oblong sack and that the heartbeat was a little high (179/min). I have looked everywhere on information and have come up with nothing. I am having another ultra sound in a couple of days, but I am going nuts because of the fear of miscarriage. I need some good medical advice as to what this means. COuld a baby survive in an oblong sack and what does the hearbeat mean. THanks for your time. RoxAnn
AnswerThe shape of the sac is of no significance, as long as you are not bleeding and there is a fetal heartbeat. Often, if you have had some elevation of temperature, the baby's heartbeat will also rise. The normal heartbeat is 120-160 beats per minute, but it can be elevated. If you have a fever, try to bring it down with Tylenol or a cool bath. It is possible for a miscarriage to occur if your temperature remains high. See if the baby's heartbeat returns to normal. If it drops to below 160,you have nothing to worry about.
