Tampons After Hysterectomy: Can I Use Them?
QuestionI am 50 and had a hysterectomy 15 years ago. FOr the last two months I have had some slight vaginal bleeding but I don't know from where the blood comes. It is slight but only enough to be bothersome. I do need to use some kind of protection. Can I use a slim tampon even if I am not having a real period? I mentioned the problem to my doc and he didn't seem to suggest any thing.
AnswerYou certainly can use a tampon if you wish, however, if you had a hysterectomy 15 years ago, you should not have any bleeding from that time on (after the incision healed). By now the incision in the vagina should be totally healed and you should not have any bleeding. I would suggest that you have your gynecologist inspect the vaginal cuff to see if there is any "granulation tissue" that may be bleeding. If there is, it can be cauterized in the office. The bleeding can also come from your urethra, and, if it is, your bladder must be evaluated. You may also merely have some inflammation of the vagina. This can also be noted on exam. DON'T IGNORE THE BLEEDING.
