Emergency Contraception with Daily Pill: Can Yasmin or Diane 35 Work?

Question
QUESTION: Hello, well my guy and i had sex on the 2nd of Mar and he ejaculated inside me. I later realized that the date of my last period was the 15th of Feb and my fertility period was from the 26th Feb to 4th Mar. I live in a country where emergency contraceptives are banned and you can only get daily contraceptives. its less than twenty four hours now since we did it.the one we get here are yasmin and diane35 ( Can you advice me if i can use the daily contraceptive as an emergency contraceptive?

ANSWER: Dear Glo,

Unfortunately I have checked all my sources and cannot find any information about Yasmin or Diane-35 as Emergency Contraceptives (EC)..

However, although I don't know where you live, there are usually more than 2 brands available, perhaps those are just the two most popular where you live. If you check out http://contraceptive.ippf.org you can look up your country and see what pills are available. You can then go to http://www.not-2-late.com and check to see if any of the other pills in your country can be used as EC. You can use EC up to 5 days after unprotected sex, however the sooner you use it the better chances you have of succeeding in stopping a pregnancy.

Another option is the IUD. This is a permanent form of birth control (lasting up to 5 years) that is a metal coil inserted into the uterus by a doctor. This can be used up to 5 days after unprotected sex as EC and can then be continued to use up to 5 years as a regular birth control.

I would recommend that if you have a regular partner that, once you figure out the current situation, you investigate a regular form of birth control so that you can better protect yourself from pregnancy.

It is very difficult to determine a woman's fertile time, it is not a precise science. You see, the woman will ovulate about 14 days BEFORE the start of her next period and it is hard to predict the exact day this will happen. The egg is then fertile for 24 hours. However, sperm can live 5 to 7 days in the uterus so unprotected sex up to one week before ovulation could result in pregnancy. Some research has also shown that there may be more than one ovulation per cycle as well.

Thus, if you are interested in a regular reliable method you should discuss hormonal contraceptives with your doctor. There are also barrier and natural methods available. Check out http://www.optionsforsexualhealth.org/birth-control-pregnancy/birth-control-opti which has some great information.

Good luck and I hope this helped,
-Allison

Answer
Like I told you in my first email, there is no information on Diane 35 or Yasmin as use as an EC.

Please let me know what country you live in and see what contraceptives are available on the IPPF website.

Then go to www.not-2-late.com to see if these pills available in your country can be used as EC.

You can do this yourself or let me know and I will look it up. It would be faster for you to do it yourself, and time is essential in this situation, but I am happy to look for you if you like.

Good luck,
Allison
