C-Section History & Labor Progression Concerns: What Are My Risks?

Question
Hello. I am 39 yrs old.I have one child who is 13 now. my lmp was 7/3/04. in 1990 when i had my son i was induced with pit on the 42nd week. after about 16 hrs my cervix dilated about 3 cm. at about 13 hrs of labor i was given an epidural. the baby went into distress and i had an emergency c-sect.i have a transvers bikini incision. the question for you is in your opinion what are the chances i'll have "failure for labor to progress?"
i'm trying to decide whether to have a scheduled csect or go to a midwife for vaginal childbirth. my obgyn is going to get the OR records and other appropriate med records----thanks for your time

Answer
The only time that you have to repeat a cesarean section is when you have a situation that is the same as the previous situation (when you had your first cesarean). If you had a contracted pelvis (that is not likely to have changed) or if you had a breech and you again have a breech, or if you have a placenta previa or an abruptio placenta, then you would need a repeat cesarean. However, you may or may not have "failure to progress in labor" again . If you want a vaginal delivery, go to a midwife and, if you do not progress in labor past 3cm, she will advise you to have a repeat cesarean section at that time.  However, having a repeat cesaean is very easy. YOu plan on the date that you will deliver, schedule the time, have the operation, and go home in 4 days. Very simple.
