QuestionThank you in advance for your time. I have a Korean wife and we just had a baby. In Korea, they have a disease that is triggered if the mom eats any cold food (ice water, fruits, etc) or is too cold. The result is the aching and possible loss of their teeth (which we have talked to many women that have actually lost their teeth.
Also, they believe that if the mother does anything at all physically, that they develop a bone disorder that lasts for the rest of their lives. Everything that I have read concerning childbirth published in English mentions nothing of these symptoms and I was hoping somebody could explain to me what exactly the Koreans experience when these things happen and if there is anywhere I can find information on these topics.
I have to say that this is all very foreign to me, but everywhere we go, older women are giving my wife advice on what she should and should not be eating and that she should not be in air conditioning and many of them have first hand stories of people that have been affected by these things. Any help or inforamtion would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Kevin M. Bourne
Answer Hello Kevin,
Please know right from the start I mean not direspect to your wife and her native beliefs.
People in other countries often have beliefs that have no medical facts behind them.
In the United States we often refer to these as "old wives tales" or "old wise tales".
You do not mention if you are in Korea now or not. I can not tell you that these things are not true since I am not from Korea and I don't have any knowledge of any special conditions that may be to the Koreans.
I do seriously doubt that eating cold foods does anything to the mother or baby.
Good luck.
