Understanding Nuchal Translucency & Potential Fetal Concerns

Question
Last week (at 13 weeks), I went for an ultrasound (nuchal translucent) where they test to see if the baby might have abnormalities (Spina Bifida, Turner's Syndrome, Downs, etc). The doctor saw that the baby's nuchal measured more than normal and there was a gap in the spinal cord. They then sent us for a second opinion where we got the same respond, but it had apparently gotten worse.  The nuchal now measured more and there is now fluid in the baby's chest.  The doctor say he is 80-90% positive that the baby might have Turner's Syndrome and chances are it won't make it thru the pregnancy. We are now waiting to go for the amniocenthesis which will confirm everything. Once we get the results, we have to make a decision if we want to terminate the pregnancy or go thru with it.  We are very scared and wondering if it often happens that the amnio could show different results than the ultrasound?

Answer
Hello Christine. I'm glad you are going for an amnio, because I have very little faith in ultrasound. I have seen them so often give all kinds of horrible predictions that prove to be wrong after birth. I know this is all very scary, but you are doing the right thing by gathering ALL the info you can. If your baby proves to have Turner's, locate a parent group for children with Turner's- maybe on the internet, and ask them about their experiences and how their lives are going before you make any termination decisions. Sometimes these special babies are given to us for a reason. Of course you must make the decision that is best for you, but I urge you to gather ALL possible info before deciding. My prayers are with you- Cheri.
