QuestionThis question is about my 18 yo daughter. This is her first pregnancy. Here is the situation:
In the past, she had normal 28-30 day cycles with periods lasting 5 days - like clockwork. On 9/1, she spotted lightly for 1/2 day. Then on 9/28, she spotted lightly for 2 days. She thought she was pregnant and did many home tests and even had 2 blood tests during Septmember - all negative. She left home on 10/7 and returned on 10/29. We did a home test that night that was immediately very positive.
She had sex on 10/1-2 (no condom but used withdrawal method). She then had sex very late on the night of 10/12 (early morning 13th) with no condom and no withdrawal. These were with 2 different men.
She had her first OB appt on 11/9 and an US was too early to date her but a well developed gestational sac and yolk sac were present (no heartbeat). She had a second US on 11/18 that dated her with an EDC of 7/1/2005 and a very strong heartbeat was heard. This is 4-5 days earlier than the date based on her last very light, abnormal period. She went again on 12/7 for an appt and the doppler was able to pick-up a very faint heartbeat several times. She would have either been 9.6 weeks (LMP) or 10.3 weeks (US) depending on which date you use.
Based on this information, which encounter is most likely to have resulted in this pregnancy? I know this is just a guess or asumption and know we are looking at paternity testing once the baby has been born. However, we are interested in knowing the likelihood of either being the father. Both have been informed of the coming baby and possibility of paternity.
I appreciate any information you can provide to us.
AnswerIf the second sonogram (11/18) showed a due date of July 1, then her last period must have been on September 25 and she must have ovulated on October 8 (if she had a normal 28 day cycle). She could have conceived on October 7,8,9, or 10. If she had a 30 day cycle that month, then ovulation would have been on October 10 and she could have conceived if she had unprotected sex on Octobert 9,10,11, or 12. I doubt that she could have conceived as early as October 1-2, so I believe the father is the person she had sex with on October 12. You can have paternity testing now during pregnancy by swabbing each man's mouth as well as your daughter's and getting a sample (via amniocentesis) of the fluid surrounding the baby and send them all for DNA testing. It costs around $1500, but you will know now. Otherwise, you can wait until the baby is born and do it then.
