Acidophilus and Fertility/Pregnancy: Safety & Effectiveness
QuestionHello -- I am 29 and am trying to conceive for the first time. Within the past month and a half I had a yeast infection and was given the one-day pill. I have heard that taking acidophilus tablets can help to regulate the "good bacteria" that prevents yeast infections from occuring. Is it safe to take acidophilus tables while trying to conceive and while pregnant? And, should a yeast infection occur again, is there a preferred method of treatment (ingested one-day pill versus topical creams)such that there are limited risks when pregnant or trying to conceive? Thanks very much for your advice!
AnswerHI Marti,
I would try and clear up any infection before trying to conceive because some of the meds may be harmful to a developing baby. Acidophilus tablets are great as well a good cultured yogurt with active cultures. Yogurt is also used topically too. Also consult this question with your pharmacist and ob.
