Birth Control Options for Beginners: A Guide for Young Adults

Question
I am 21 years old and never used birth control, primarily because I don't have any one around me to explain it to me. I really would like to know exactly how to go about getting birth controls pills?  Should I have to get an exam by a gyn?  What should I expect when going to get examined by a gyn? I know these aren't exactly pregnancy issues but I didn't know where else to turn, it's hard to talk to other people face to face about these things for me and this seemed like a good way to start.

Answer
If you are 21 years old and are sexually active, you should definitely start to see a gynecologist every year for an examination and a PAP smear. A PAP smear is a test for cervical cancer and is merely a swab of your cervix that shows any changes in the cells. You must have a PAP smear every year for the rest of your life. You must have a pelvic exam and discuss your sexual, menstrual, and medical history with the doctor in order to start birth control pills. The pills will regulate your menstrual period and prevent pregnancy if you have sex. The exam will educate you as to any problems you may have in your reproductive organs and you should definitely be aware of what is going on with your body.
