Green Tea & Birth Control: Potential Interactions & Weight Management Options

Question
I have been taking mega t green tea occasionally to lose weight, not every day.  Does this product reduce the effectiveness of my birth control pill ortho-tri cyclin?  Also, what other methods of birth control are there with little side effects and no weight gain.  Thank You.

Answer
I do not know the effects of green tea on birth control pills, so I cannot say whether there is any effect. However, I have not seen any mention of decreased effectiveness due to  nutritional items.  The best method of birth control is the pill or the patch. As long as you do not smoke, there are minimal side effects (headache, nausea, breakthrough bleeding). The manufacturers still claim that the pill does not cause weight gain, but many patients claim that they do, indeed, gain weight while on the pill. (Most of it is due to retention of water). The pill lowers the incidence of iron deficiency anemia, pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts, cancer of the ovary, cancer of the uterus, benign cystic breast disease, acne, dysmenorrhea, and is 99.9% effective against pregnancy. The patch works in the same way and is as effective as the pill. The next best method of birth control is the diaphram, which has to be fitteed. It is 97& effective and does not cause weight gain. It is, however, tedious to use each time. I would recommend that you continue to use the pill or the patch and I see no reason to stop the tea if it heops control your weight.
