Unexpected Bleeding While on Ortho Novum: Causes & Concerns

Question
no children, 8/7

I am seventeen and have been taking ortho novum for a year and a half. Last month i started my period a week early without missing any pills, then when i started over again after my period i started bleeding again after only taking a weeks worth of pills. my doctor wants to do a pregnancy test before switching my pills. Could i be pregnant, my breasts have been sore and i have been tired latley? Also when i was bleeding it was kinda like mucusy or something.

Answer
If you have not missed any pills, it is highly unlikely  that you could have conceived. HOwever, stranger things have ocurred. There is no danger in continuing (or changing) pills while yhou are pregnant, as long as you stop taking birth control pills before the start of the secnd trimester of pregnancy. HOwever, if you want to know for sure, take a pregnancy test. The best  time to take a pregnancy test is seven days after missing your period.
