Answer
Until you actually go into labor, the baby may be quite labile and move all around your uterus. Once you start having contractions every 3 minutes from the beginning of one contraction to the beginning of the next contraction (at the level of your belly button), and each contractions remains hard for a full minute, and this continues for a full hour, we consider you to be in labor. If, at that time, the baby is found to be in the transverse presentation, you should be delivered by cesarean section. This is done because it is safer for you and the baby, and because if it remains transverse, there could be an umbilical cord prolapse if you rupture your membranes.  If, on the other hand, the baby is in the vertex position when you go into labor, you can, most likely, deliver vaginally. The baby can turn either way, but usually will not declare itself until you actually go into labor. In the first pregnancy, labor usually does not start until 40-42 weeks gestation.
