Baby Position in Labor: Understanding Posterior Presentations
Questionwhat type of complications could occur if babies back is lying against mums back in labor?
AnswerThere are no complications if the baby's back is agaiinst the mother's back during labor. However, the position of the baby is important. If the head is facing down (Anterior presentation) it is easier to deliver than if the head is facinig up ("sunny side up) (posterior presentation). A baby in the posterior position behaves as if it is a pound heavier than if it were in the anterior position. A baby in the posterior presentation sometimes causes "back labor" where the contractions are felt in the mother's back. Sometimes, the mother cannot push the baby out and may need to be delivered by cesarean section.
