Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome & Pregnancy: Risks & Considerations
QuestionDear Dr Rappaport
I have a friend who has Ehlers Danos syndrome and wishes to become pregnant and is wondering if having this collagen disease would cause any problems. The obstetrician I usually deal with did not know the answer. Can you advise.
Thanks
AnswerI'm sorry I took so long. I found some additional information on Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and pregnancy. Women with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome have an increased frequency of preterm rupture of membranes nd preterm delivery. There is also an increase in antepartum and postpartum hemorrhage. Tissue fragility makes episiotomy repair and cesarean delivery difficult. Multiple musculoskeletal abnormalities may develop or worsen during pregnancy and back pain may be exacerbated.
