Fetal Movement & Heartbeat in Early Pregnancy: What to Expect

Question
I am 26 and 7wks pregnant with my second child. My Dr did an abdominal ultrasound at 5wks and saw a gestational sac and yolk sac. He did another ab ultrasound 2wks later to be sure of the dates because my period is irregular. He said everything was fine because he saw the fetus moving, but I am concerned because we did not see a heartbeat. He assured me that the baby is fine or it would not be moving, but I'm still concerned. Should I have a vaginal ultrasound? Could being overweight make it difficult to see the heartbeat?

Answer
If the fetus was, indeed, moving on the sonogram, it had to have a heartbeat. Sometimes, it is difficult to identify the heart, not due to your habitus but due to positional problems. Don't worry. You will have another sonogram at 20 weeks and will see the fetus and the fetal heartbeat.
