Evening Primrose Oil for Cervical Softening: Does it Work?

Question
I am now 38wk1d. I have been dilated 1fingertip for 2 wks but my cervix is still very hard according to my OB/GYN. I have been reading up on ways to help soften the cervix. Even tried sex with my husband multiple time to help and just find out this is so uncomfortable and still no luck. I keep reading about the use of EPO. I dont mind taking the pills if they will help. Also, I read you should insert them into the cervix. This I am very skeptical about and would like to know if you have any comments on this.  Thanks for your time.

Answer
HI Christy,

If it were me, I would not insert anything in to my cervix during the pregnancy without approval from the Dr.  You are at a crucial point in your pregnancy and you do not want to introduce and infection into your cervix.  Is this your first pregnancy?  You still have plenty of time for you cervix to become soft.  I know it seems like it is taking forever, but these things can happen overnight.  I wouldn't advise taking anything without asking your doctor first. If your cervix isn't soft by your due date or a little earlier, your doctor can do something called "stripping the membranes".  That causes hormones to be released that help to soften the cervix.  It is no more that a vaginal exam and he "scrapes" the cervix.  This is the most natural way of softening the cervix without using medicine.  I hope this helps.
