Lexapro and Pregnancy: Safety & Considerations for Expectant Mothers

Question
Hi Doctor

I suffer from depression and generalised anxiety.  I am currently taking 10mgs of Lexapro daily.

Should I be continuing this drug while we are trying to conceive?  I really don't want to come off the drug if I don't have, as it appears to be working, and I can't cope with the overwhelming feelings I get from anxiety.

Do you have any knowledge of this anti-depressant and pregnancy?

Thank You
Jenny

Answer
The most studied antidepressant that can safely be usedduring pregnancy is Prozac. Although it appears that Lexapro is also safe, it has not been studies as thoroughly as Prozac. Paxil should not be used during pregnancy. It would be better if  you did not use any antidepressant during pregnancy. However, if you must, I would prefer Prozac.
