Understanding Ectopic Pregnancy After Tubal Ligation: A Patient's Story

Question
I am a 36 year old mother of two.  I had a tubal ligation in 1997, after my son was born.  With this procedure, my OBGYN "clamped" my tubes.  Two year later, I became pregnent for the third time.  Unfortunately, it ended in a miscarriage.  At that time, it was decided to cut AND burn both of my tubes to prevent this from happening again.  Last March, I found myself pregnant again.  This time, however, it turned out to be a tubal, (ectopic) pregnancy.  The doctors told me that my only option was to have both of my tubes removed, which they did.

After reading your response to "can my tubes grow back after being cut or burned?", I can't help but wonder if you know what your talking about when you said that the tubes cannot grow back, becuase I'm living proof that it happened to me.

Answer
Fallopian tubes cannot grow back. However, depending on how the procedure was performed, recanalization cab occur where one side of the tube touches the other. If a "Pomeroy" tubal ligation is done, a loop is created and tied or clamped. At the base of the tube, an opening can be created. The two times that you became pregnant after the tubal ligation, the procedure may have been performed incorrectly, or it could be that they cut and burnt a structure other than the tube. Believe me that I know what I am talking about. I have been in practice for 26  years and have been performing gynecological surgery fo 26 years.
