QuestionHi,
I am currently 35 weeks pregnant. I had my iron checked at 33 weeks and the level was 11, the nurse told me that I am anemic. I am just wondering is that a pretty severe number and most importantly will I still be able to have an epidural? I started taking Slow Fe (iron supplements) along with my prenatals. Do you think my levels will improve by delivery?
Thanks
jennifer
AnswerHi Jennifer,
This not an uncommon condition that pregnant women develop. So just know, that its not unheard of at all.
This is a very curable condition, and I am going to give you a few tips, to keep in mind so that you will have a safe labour, and delivery.
First off, know that you prognosis is Good.Usually curable with iron and folic acid supplements by mouth or injection. And you are doing that already. Keep in mind, that you might want to discuss your folic acid intake with your physician a little more. Its possible you might have to take a little more, then what is already in, your vitamins.
Also, Eat foods rich in iron, such as liver, beef, whole-grain breads and cereals, eggs and dried fruit. Eat foods high in folic acid, such as wheat germ, beans, peanut butter, oatmeal, mushrooms, collards, broccoli, beef liver and asparagus. Eat foods high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits and fresh, raw vegetables. Vitamin C makes iron absorption more efficient. Take prenatal vitamin and mineral supplements, especially folic acid(We already touched on the folic acid aspect, I know ..Just a reminder)
Also Jennifer consider increasing your fibre as well, and your intake of liquid. All this iron, can cause constipation and you certainly dont need that ontop of being pregnant. Taking more fibre and fluid, will prevent just an added headache, that being constipated.
As for the epideral ..
Your level is not outrageous, and I think with proper diet, and taking your suppliments you will do just fine.
Just remember that with anemia, it makes it very hard for blood to clot. But again, with your level being an 11..I dont think you will have a major issue.
One would never want to administer an epidural or any other form of regional anesthesia to a woman with a clotting disorder. The risk of hemorrhage at the site or into the cerebral spinal fluid could be disastrous, but again this applies in extreme situations.
It is very unlikely that your values will be abnormal. They are looking for true anemia, probably less than 9 to 10. Many pregnant women have below normal hemoglobins. They are also looking for women with low values for both, not just a low hemoglobin.
Hope this was of some Help. Good Luck to You :)
