QuestionI've been trying to figure out how to find a good prenatal vitamin. The two that doctors have recommended to me are not covered well under my insurance. I found out which are covered, but how do I know if they're good? If I buy over-the-counter, for what should I look? It seems like you just need to make sure they have sufficient folic acid? Is that really true? I've also read that how well the vitamins and minerals are absorbed is important. How can ensure this?
AnswerHi Wendi :)
I am from Canada, so I am not familiar with the vitamins, that are from other countries.
However, the best vitamin that I do know is available in the States, and Canada, is called Materna.
Materna, does have folic acid in it, and a significant amount. Infact, it has more folic acid then most. But keep in mind, that women whom have genetics that carry conditions like spina bifida, ect sometimes need to take an extra suppliment of folic acid.
Even if your insurance doesnt cover Materna, its quite reasonable ..about 12-20 dollars for a 3 month supply.
Thats the best on the marker, from my knowledge, and the leading brand.
As for folic acid, if your carry genes that could be passed to your offspring posting risk of deformity then you need to take a suppliment. If you are over 35 years of age, its often reccomended that you take additional folic acid as well. But this has to be at your doctors discretion.
Also, certain foods high in folic acid that you could eat are, leavy green veggies, grapefruit, oranges, and beans
Here is a link, on Materna, to give you more information.

Hope this is of some help, and anymore questions please dont hesitate to ask, thanks for writing.
