Pregnancy Concerns: Spotting After a Fall - What Could It Mean?

Question
I am 6 1/2 weeks pregnant.  I fell 2 days ago and landed on my side. The next day I had some cramping. Today when I wiped I noticed a tiny drop of blood.  Is this a sign I am going to have a miscarrige.

Answer
Hi Trisha :)

So sorry to hear about your fall, I understand that its very frightening, especially when pregnant.

Keep in mind, that during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy its not uncommon to spot a little.

Now given that you did have a fall, this could be indication that your body is simply just warning you to take it easy. Quite often, when pregnant ladies over do themselves, they will cramp and spot. Most of the time these ladies are overexerting themselves, lifting things far to heavy, and other things of that nature. Spotting and cramping can be simply your bodies way of telling you to slow down and take it easy.

Now, keep in mind right now your baby is surrounded in fluid, in your uterus. Its very secure in its surroundings.

However, sometimes in serious cases, injury can occur that can be potentially serious. The placenta can tear from the uterine lining, and this can be potentially serious.

I am almost certain that you are fine. However, for precaution I would certainly notify your doctor and make him aware of your fall, and your symptoms. He may want to examine you just to rule out anything that could be potentially wrong.

In the mean time, I suggest you take it very easy right now. Keep those feet up when you can, no heavy lifting, no standing for long periods of time, and let your partner do household duties for now. You just need to pamper yourself and take care of you, and baby right now.

Hope this is of some help, and thanks for writing. Please write back if you have any more concerns :)
