Pregnancy and Period Timing: Understanding Conception & Implantation

Question
i had my period last month but i am not sure when but know for sure that i had one, and i just found out yesterday on dec 1st that i am pregnant. does this mean that i have gotten pregnant since my last period?

Answer
Dear Brandy,

More than likely - yes. Some women do have a period after conception, but this isn't necessarily the norm. Many women do have what is called implantation bleeding approximately 6-12 days after conception which can be mistaken for a period. However, it is usually lighter and shorter in duration than a normal period.

In your case, not knowing when your bleeding occurred, or whether it was a normal period for you, it will be more difficult to determine by dates when conception took place, unless there were limited sexual encounters. If I had to guess, based on what you've told me, I'd say that more than likely you had a period early in the month and conceived mid-month. A positive test on 12/1 would indicate that you would have conceived at least 2 weeks prior to testing in order for there to be enough of the pregnancy hormone for the HPT to pick it up - meaning you are more than likely about 2.5-3 weeks along now if you had a normal period the first part of November.

An ultrasound at approximately 6-8 weeks will more accurately confirm gestational age. I would suspect this will probably be scheduled by your doctor in January. If by chance the bleeding you experienced last month was implantation bleeding and not a normal period, ultrasound will show the baby to be 3-4 weeks further along in gestational age based on size and development. However, if you are not experiencing any symptoms of pregnancy yet, at this point I'd still bet you are approximately 2-3 weeks along.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. Please don't hesitate to write again with further questions. I wish you a happy Christmas! :-)
