QuestionHi Brenda
I had asked you question 2 weeks ago and got your reply.Thank you. And now have more questions, hope you can help.
Some information for your easy reference.
LMP:3/5/2007
IUI : 3/17/07 with 2 eggs
HCG on 3/30/07 = 373
HCG on 4/6/07 = 8221, progesterone = 66, started using progesterone gel from 3/19 upto now
I had first ultrasound on 4/13/07 and we saw very clearly two separate yolk sacs. Today 4/20/2007, 6 week 4 days, I have just had my 2nd ultrasound and I am very upset. We had seen one fetus is 6W4D, CRL 6.4mm, and heartbeat 121BPM.I could hear the heartbeat as well. It seems that this one is OK, right?
However, for the second one, at first we saw an empty space, the doctor was quite uncertain about the reason why and, he then adjusted the angel, we then saw a very light shadow and he said he really doubt whether this one was a fetal pole, on the screen, CRL = 4.3mm, 6W1D and 132 BPM. Can you tell me what are that mean? The worst is we did not hear heartbeat / anything and could not locate the fetus' heart. My concern is: this is too early to say that it is miscarriaged, or there is still hope?
I am very upset now, and I think that I have done something wrong so that I lost one of them, Please advise the chane of its servival and what should I do? Thanks
AnswerDear Elaine,
I guess I am confused - you have said with the Baby B that there was empty space with one angle, a very light shadow with another angle, but then you give data as to the CRL, gestational age, and heart rate from the screen. Was the data on the screen from the Baby A? Because you also say that you saw no heart activity for Baby B, so that would discount the 132BPM heart rate.
My thought is that you should be much more assertive in your questions with your doctor. It is very difficult to be able to give you absolute and/or accurate information as a 3rd party without actual firsthand knowledge when the situation is complex as this one is.
I will tell you that this does sometimes happen that only one twin will survive. It can be for one or more of MANY reasons. But it sounds Baby B did not develop at all if I am understanding correctly. When this happens, it is most often due to a chromosomal abnormality of one type or another - either a faulty egg or sperm cell or a problem at the time that the fertilized egg went through the division process. This situation is nothing that you could have prevented in any way. And there really is nothing for you to do now except carry your baby that is healthy to term and follow the recommendations of your doctor.
I hope this has helped you and answered your questions. I wish you well.
