Navigating Pregnancy & Cancer: A 36-Year-Old's Story & Treatment
QuestionI just found out that I am pregnant with my first pregnancy at age 36. I am currently in my 6th week and just found out that I have some sort of cancer in my mouth. The biopsy I had done in May came back saying low grad miligant tumor. I just met with the cancer doctor who tell me that I have to wait until the second trimester to receive a CT scan on the head and jaw. And that it would be best to remove more of the gum and part of my lower jaw bone from my 6-8 molars. They say no harm will come to the baby during this CT or surgery...but how will my baby get enough nutrients if I can not eat properly and am on a feedding tube for days and to sore to eat and use my mouth after. And now that I have cancer will my baby have cancer? I am very scared this was supposed to be a very happy time and now it's very sad. Thank you for your time and response.

AnswerDear Linda,
No, your baby will not contract cancer from the cancer you have been diagnosed with. I know you have some worries right now, but you need not add that one to your list.
Your OB doctor will work together with your oncologist and surgeon to make sure that you are receiving adequate nutrition for both you and your baby. Nature has a way of getting the nutrients to that baby, even when the mom is lacking a bit. You may not be gaining any weight during that time, but the baby will take what he/she needs. The best thing to do is go into the cancer procedure as healthy as you possibly can.
Please remember - this can still be a happy time. It is truly amazing...the power that a baby has to heal our ills and grief. I have seen (and experienced) it over and over again. Try to focus on the gift you are carrying and you will be amazed.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
