QuestionI am just about 20 weeks pregnant and this past monday i got to work and had some dark brownish pink discharge. I called my job right away and went in to see him about an hour later. he examined me and more came out onto the table. he did not take any swabs to test for infection but instead just put me on a weeks bed rest. I was only aloud to leave my house to go to my ultrasound which was 2 days ago. I'm also having allot of pelvic pressure pain but the ultrasound lady told my my cervix was fine. i went to see my doctor on my way home to try and get some answers but he had nothing to tell me. Can you tell me anything?
AnswerDear Crystal,
Unfortunately, I cannot give you any definitive answers either. It does sound like your OB doctor is being very cautious with you, so follow his direction. I would suspect that he will look at the ultrasound findings after the radiologist has a chance to read the scan and send the report to your doctor. At that time he may have further information for you. Hopefully, it will be that everything looks fine! :-) It sounds like the pelvic pressure is not related to an incompetent cervix from what the sonographer shared with you, so that is good.
It may have been a small pocket of blood which can collect between the layers of the developing placenta or between the placenta and the uterine wall. This is called a subchorionic hematoma. Sometimes this causes some bleeding late in the 1st trimester or early in the 2nd trimester. If that is the case, it is something that can usually be seen with an ultrasound and they often resolve on their own.
However, there really is no sense in speculating on the possibilities at this point. If there is something abnormal, a scan will usually pick something up. Once your doctor gets that report, I'm sure he will have more to share with you. Until then, take advantage of the time to rest and take care of yourself.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question to some degree. :-) I wish you well.
