Delayed Period & Negative Pregnancy Tests: Understanding Potential Causes

Question
QUESTION: I last had my period on Oct. 6. My boyfriend and I played around on October 12 and November 11. There's no penetration involved but his genital touched mine ( hoax sex without clothes on). I'm still a virgin. It's November 19 now and I should have had my period on November 8-10. I'm really worried that I might be pregnant. I can't focus on my work because of this thought. I took a pregnancy test on Novemer14 and November 18 and they resulted to negative. I used to first urine in the morning. Please help. I don't want to have a child yet. Should I be worried that I'm pregnant?yed. 2 negative pregnancy test. Could I be pregnant?

ANSWER: Dear Ettel,

The chances of pregnancy are low. First, because you would not have been expected to ovulate until approximately 10/20. So, 10/12 would have been too soon for you to have been fertile in the cycle. Second, because there was no penetration. Now...you must be careful because as long as wet semen (even if it is preejaculate - the little bit of semen that seeps out of the penis prior to actual ejaculation) is near the entrance to your vagina, the possibility will exist for a sperm cell to travel up through your vaginal canal and make its way to an egg if you are fertile. It would have to be a very determined sperm cell, but the possibility does exist.

If you have had two negative pregnancy tests taken at least one week after the expected start of your period and/or three weeks after a potential conception date, I would suspect you are not pregnant.

There are many various causes for amenorrhea (absence of periods) - pregnancy being just one. Others can be:
-Hormonal abnormalities, which cause fluctuating levels of the hormones needed to support menstruation
-Emotional or physical stress / Depression
-Rapid weight loss or gain
-Change in diet
-Low body weight
-Obesity
-Frequent or strenuous exercise
-Cysts or tumors in the ovaries
-Thyroid or Pituitary dysfunction
-Certain medications or drug use
-Menopause OR Premature ovarian failure (menopause before age 40)
-Occasionally stopping birth control pills

The general recommendation is that if you miss three consecutive periods and pregnancy is not the reason, you should see your doctor so that a cause can be determined. More than likely your doctor will do a quantitative blood pregnancy test (serum beta hCG) to make sure that pregnancy is ruled out as an option.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.

QUESTION: A year or two ago, I was medicated because I was delayed for several months. The doctor said that it was because of stress. But that time I don't feel stressed at all.

Is the same thing probably happening again to me because I don't feel stress at work right now?

Two weeks ago, I changed my daily routine because we started cooking in our apartment and I am tasked to do the morning cooking so I'll have to wake up earlier. I use to wake up at past 7 in the morning but since the cooking I wake up at 6 in the morning.

Can that change in routine be a factor?
Should I take another pregnancy test? When?

Thank you very much. I really appreciate that you took some time to answer my questions.
I've been worrying about this all day long because I really can't get pregnant.
God Bless.

Answer
Dear Ettel,

If you do have a history of stress-related amenorrhea, then this may very well be the same situation going on again. The change in your routine, if it is "tasking" you, may very well be a contributing factor.

I would suggest that you try to relax about the possibility of a pregnancy for a couple of weeks. In the meantime, give yourself that time to get used to the change in routine. Your period may resume on its own. If it has not done so in another couple of weeks, go ahead and re-test (making sure you use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample). If it is again negative, give your doctor a call. Let him/her know what has gone on, that you continue to get negative tests, and think you may be experiencing another stress related delay. You will probably receive the same treatment as before to get cycles "kick started" again.

Hope that helps. Be well!
