QuestionQUESTION: Hello, I have some questions I am very concerned. I am unsure about who the father of my baby is, and I am in desperate need of advice. My LMP was June 7th. I had unprotected sex with my partner throughout the month of June. My ex was here in July, and I was with him on July 2nd. I am pretty sure I had implantation bleeding on July 5th. My HPT came back a very clear positive on July 10th. I also had some trouble with cramping so I was in the ER on July 14th, They took my HCG levels and they were 1940 ( this was 12 days after being with my ex). I had an ultrasound on July 16th, which dated me at 4wks 5 days, and another on Sept 11th which dated me 13 wks 2 days. I know that this is not considered a form of birth control, but with my ex, we used the pull out method and he did not ejaculate inside of me. I am very scared that this might not be my boyfriends baby. My questions are: Is it possible to have implantation bleeding 3 days after conception? Is it possible to have a positive home pregnancy test 8 days past conception? Do you think i could have an hcG level of 1940 11-12 days past conception? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time
ANSWER: Dear Megan,
The most conclusive data which you have shared with me are the early ultrasound results. Ultrasounds which are done early on in a pregnancy are the most accurate way of dating that pregnancy...period.
Both ultrasounds indicate a conception date in late June. It sounds like you may have ovulated a bit later than normal in that cycle, or you may have longer cycles than the average 28 day cycles. With the 4 week, 5 days result on the initial ultrasound, I calculate an approximate conception date of 6/27/07 and an estimated due date of 3/19/08. The 2nd ultrasound matches up with this pretty closely (within 3 days - indicating a conception date of 6/24).
So, I believe you can be fairly confident that conception took place during the last week of June and your due date is approximately 3/13/08 (according to LMP) to 3/19/08 (according to ultrasound dating).
I'll answer your other questions, but the answers are really insignificant with the ultrasound findings...
Implantation bleeding 3 days after conception would be highly improbable, as the process of fertilization and travel from the point of fertilization to the uterus and actually implanting typically takes at least 5-6 days.
I won't say it would be absolutely impossible to get a positive HPT 8 days after conception - but again, highly unlikely.
An hCG level of 1940 mIU/ml is in the normal range of a 5 week pregnancy. Normal for 11-12 days post-conception (3 week pregnancy) would be less than 100 mIU/ml.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.

QUESTION: Brenda,
Thank YOu so much for the advice. I have one more question. Do you think it would be possible to see a gestational sac measuring 8mm 14 days past conception? What would the normal gestational age be for a sac measuring 8mm? Thank you
ANSWER: Dear Megan,
You are very welcome! The 8mm gestational sac measurement would be indicative of an approximate 5 week gestational age pregnancy. At 14 days post-conception, a gestational sac is typically not even seen via ultrasound at all, let alone measured.
Hope that helps. Be well and Merry Christmas!

QUESTION: Thanks again Brenda,
I know that the only way to be 100% positive of paternity is to do a DNA test. However, I am 7 months pregnant, and having extreme anxiety about this situation. In your opinion, based on the information I have given you, do you think that there is a possibility this could be my ex's baby?
AnswerDear Megan,
Again, both ultrasounds indicate a conception date in late June. I do believe you can be fairly confident that conception took place during the last week of June and your due date is approximately 3/13/08 (according to LMP) to 3/19/08 (according to ultrasound dating). If you deliver mid-March and the baby is full-term, this would validate these results. If you deliver a bit earlier, but the baby is pre-term, it still validates the results.
Try not to worry over-much. You know - it is what it is. Worrying, stressing yourself out and causing stress in the pregnancy, will not change a thing.
I hope this has helped you. Enjoy your Christmas holiday!
