Understanding High Beta with No Fetal Pole: What Does It Mean?

Question
Hello I am around 8 weeks pregnant past beta-1345, then 3047(48 hr.s later)I had a sono on Thursday and the Dr. is very confidant that the pregnancy will end. I have had 4 m/c so I have strong doubts as well. The sono reflected a sac, but no fetal pole I was measuring around 5m 4days. My beta came back in 13,147. Dr. thinks the baby just stopped developing. What do you think?
thank you for your time.

Answer
Dear Lisa,

Sorry about the delay in answering - I am actually supposed to be on vacation, but the system apparently did not set correctly. I happened to check in to make sure and saw there were three days worth of questions, so I will attempt some short answers while I have a house full of company going in thirty different directions around me! :-)

Unfortunately, if you are 8 weeks via LMP dating and ultrasound dating up to this point - and now there is no further development beyond the 5 week, 4 day point, it is not encouraging. Plus, your hCG levels are at 13,147 mIU/ml, which usually would be indicative of a pregnancy in at least the 6th week. And at 8 weeks, normally we'd like to have the hCG level around/above 100,000 mIU/ml.

If you are sure about your dating, the news is not encouraging. Otherwise, I suppose it is possible that the pregnancy is just not as far along as you originally suspected. More than likely your doctor will order a follow-up ultrasound in another week or so to determine if there has been any further fetal development before proceeding definitively either way.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well and a Merry Christmas.
