QuestionWhat is your knowledge/opinion on having amalgam fillings put in while pregnant? I needed to have a (non metal) filling replaced because it broke and the dentist talked me into using the amalgam since it's in a spot in the back of my mouth that is subject to a lot of force from chewing. I mentioned to him that there was a good chance I was pregnant and he still assured me it's safe. Two days later, I missed my period and found out I'm pregnant. Of course, now I'm freaking out and having fantasies of having the filling removed right away. Should I be worried about the mercury? Also, I should probably mention that I am a sushi fanatic and I used to eat tuna rolls at least once a week--at least until I read the latest studies about the mercury(!) Thanks for your help.
AnswerDear Amy,
Well, first - I am very glad you are keeping yourself so well-informed! Good for you!
Obviously, sushi is kind of off limits for the duration of the pregnancy. At least, it is not recommended.
As for the amalgam - According to the study, "Mercury Exposure from Dental Filling Placement During Pregnancy and Low Birth Weight Risk," from the April 15, 2005 issue of American Journal of Epidemiology, they "found no evidence that mercury-containing dental fillings, placed during pregnancy, increase low-birth-weight risk." I could find no information that conflicted with that since that date.
So...though you should definitely be aware of what you eat and limit any mercury-containing foods, I would not stress about that filling.
I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
