Pregnancy Risk After Slipping Condom: A Medical Perspective

Question
Hi brenda, my period began marhc 26 and ended on march 31 (28 days cycle). We had sex on april 5, we are using a condom however when he is ready to ejaculate, he pulled it, but the condom was slipped. Is it highly possible i could be pregnant?

Answer
Dear Shekinah,

If the condom slipped off during or after ejaculation, the sex was essentially unprotected. Anytime you have unprotected sex you have to consider yourself susceptible to pregnancy, however there are times during the cycle when your chances are higher. Now - as for the timing of this encounter, it sounds like it occurred on cycle day 11. With a 28 days cycle, a woman's fertile window is typically CD 11-21, with the MOST fertile days being CDs 13-16. The window exists because, A) there can be variation in your ovulation day by 24 hours or so (and sometimes longer) and B) Sperm cells can survive once past the cervix for up to five days under ideal conditions. So... you were right on the edge of being fertile. I can't say your chances were high, nor can I say they were low. I would have to say that, since you attempted to protect yourselves, I suppose if conception did occur - it did it against the odds and maybe was meant to be or part of a grander plan.  :-)

You will need to test for pregnancy to know for sure. Although some tests claim accuracy on the first day of a missed period, I usually suggest that women wait until the week after a missed or spotty period before testing for pregnancy. This tends to minimize the incidence of false negative results and also avoids wasting money on a test for a simple delay of a period by a few days. When/if you test make sure to use 1st morning urine to get a concentrated sample for the most accurate results.

I hope this has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
